This is my personal version of an eternal Book of Portuguese Wines. The book is eternal in the way that it never stays the same. Now and then new pages are added, or the old pages are rewritten, updated or corrected.

Three Portuguese and two French grapes were used for this Madeira table wine. The result is not convincing. Scents of red berries, caramel and tar, a rather acidic wine. Fine with a salad with ham, egg and cheese. You can also drink without food, but it’s not an amazing wine.

Yellow wine with scents of citrus, peach and vanilla. Strong taste in which you feel the Verdelho grape, relatively short finish with some taste of wood. The wine is better than the one I tried the other day (Atlantis Verdelho), but I don’t think I’ll ever be really excited about wines made from this grape. We had the wine with sandwichs and salad. It was OKwith the food, but not so nice without.

In 1811, Englishman John Blandy founded a company in Funchal, Madeira, which produced Madeira Wine. Today, Blandy is a part of Madeira Wine Company, which produced this white wine I. I have previously tasted the corresponding rosé wine, which I liked. Unfortunately, I’m not fond about this white wine, which is made 100% on Verdelhodruen, one of the traditional grapes for the making of Madeira wine.

It is a yellow wine with scents of citrus, passion fruit and marzipan. Very heavy but sour wine. I did not like it at all for salad and sandwich, and it is totally unsuitable as an aperitif. Perhaps it suits other types of food, but I doubt it.

This wine originates from Câmera de Lobos, the well-known tourist destination. Churchill visited the city – at least once – and painted some of the views. The label has a picture of the towns colorful fishing boats.

The grapes are probably grown in Estreito de Câmera de Lobos located in the hills above the city. The well-known winemaker from mainland Portugal, Paulo Laureano, has been consulting in the making of the wine at the Adega de São Vicente on the north coast.

The wine has a beautiful pink color, a fresh scent of red berries, and a powerful creamy taste. Not too much acid. I think that this rosé is best for food. We had the wine with a green salad with eggs and cheese, and it was excellent with shrimps. In my opinion it was the best table wine from Madeira, I had during a stay on Madeira January-February 2016.

It is a yellow wine with a slight reminiscence of menthol, eucalyptus or perhaps orange peel in the aroma. The wine gives a rich fullness feel in the mouth, and there is little oak in the finish. Lovely wine to drink on the terrace and it was fine with a salad of stockfish with garbanzo beans and chopped onions.

We tasted this wine during a stay on Madeira January-February 2016.

Very dark wine with purple edges. The two French grapes yield an intense aroma of red fruit (cherries). The wine has much fruit with balanced acidity and tannins. There is some bitterness in the aftertaste. It’s a nice wine that one can be enjoyed slightly chilled without food. It paired well with the Portuguese dish “carne em vinhos the alhos” (meat marinated in wine and garlic).

Terras do Avô Branco Grande Escolha

Alcohol: 12.5%

Region: DOP Madeirense.

Shopping: Souvenirs Paixão, Seixal (More shops).

Duarte Caldeira started producing wines under his own brand, Terras do Avô, in 2008. At the time he had replanted a vine in the Seixal region on Madeira’s north coast. Some of the land was inherited from his grandfather, hence the name of the wine Terras do Avô (Grandfather’s land). Despite the fact that the cultivated land is very small, it is divided into 31 parcels on several terraces, one of which is only 19 square meters. It is of course impossible to use machines so that all harvesting is done manually. Some of the grapes come from neighbours, and some of them only provides a single basket of grapes.

What you first notice when looking at the bottle, is the exceptionally ugly label designed by the Madeiran artist Marco Fagundes Vasconcelos. The wine is light yellow with a greenish tint. It has a fresh aroma of jelly and pear. Taste-wise, the wine is dry with some acid and a fairly short aftertaste. We had the wine with green salad, with cheese and eggs, and it suited well. The wine can also be enjoyed on its own.

The grapes for this wine are mainly grown on small, low peninsulas (Fajãs) in the Seixal parish on the north coast of Madeira. The vines are located very close to the sea on the wild, rugged coast. Often they are protected by fences woven of plants from the area.

The wine is bright and yellow, it has a friendly scent of citrus and peach, and a round taste with some acid in the finish. We enjoyed the wine grilled chicken with rice, Portuguese sausage, potatoes and vegetables. It is a lovely wine, which can be enjoyed on its own.

We tasted this wine during a stay on Madeira January-February 2016.
